Jason Manns is an american songwriter, we interviewed him for you and we asked some questions about his work and his collaboration with “Supernatural”, a TV series.
From where was your passion for music born? When exactly did you realize that you’d be a singer?
My dad has a great singing voice and I suppose he kind of taught me how to sing, or at least singing with him growing up was what instilled that desire to sing. I never really realized I would be a singer, I only really saw that in retrospect, I had become one. When I came to LA, singing was one of three or four pursuits that I really enjoyed, but out of all the things I thought were possibilities a professional singer wasn’t what I would have put my bet on! I just started working more and more as a musician, and the kind of suddenly I realized that I am in fact solely a musician and have been for years, and I can’t complain. I really love it, and as long as I continue to get better with every song/tour/album/etc. I wouldn’t change it for the world.
How would you describe the international music industry?
Fascinating, new, vibrant, challenging. It really is ever-changing. Even since my first album came out in ’06, the industry has completely changed. It wasn’t long ago that an indie musician didn’t have much of a chance because it was so difficult to get your music into stores for people to buy, but now with Itunes and all the other online stores, my music is available in almost all of the same places every major label artist is. There are also opportunities to play for people online, which is a new an innovative way to connect with fans. I’ve actually got a show coming up on my birthday this month, and I’m raising money for Charity by playing a show on Stageit! http://www.stageit.com/jason_manns/playing_for_change_benefit_show_my_birthday/12603 Now it’s just a matter of getting the word out there!
How difficult do you think it is to reach success today in the music business?
In some ways it’s easier, like what I was just saying about the available distribution channels. The barriers to entry are almost non-existant, so in that way it is less difficult. The problem is that it’s also just as easy for everyone else to get their music onto Itunes so there is so much stuff out there it’s difficult to set yourself apart and grab the attention of new fans. So I think it is easier to reach a small level of success than ever before, however, to break that plateau and really stand out above the crowd is extremely difficult.
Some of your songs were used in the Supernatural soundtrack, how did you begin working with them?
I met Jensen a long time ago. In fact it was my first week in LA, and we’ve been buds ever since. He has always been really supportive of my music, and it was through him that I got the chance to play at a fan event for Supernatural in Los Angeles. I happened to meet the creator of the show, Eric Kripke there as well, and we got to chatting and he asked for a CD. He said they’d find a place for it in the show, and I kind of laughed and told him I sing a lot of love songs, so I’m not sure it was the right vibe for two bad-ass ghost hunting brothers in an Impala, but he grinned and said he’d find something for it. Sure enough they did, and it was a very funny, tongue-in-cheek scene, especially knowing the conversation we had.
You were at the Jus in Bello convention. What was it like? Did you enjoy yourself?
Jus In Bello!! Rome!! Daniela!! I was absolutely thrilled to be invited back to Rome for the 3rd time to take part in Jus in Bello and it gets better every time! I thoroughly enjoyed myself, as did every actor, musician, spouse, and fan I spoke to. Daniela and her staff really go above and beyond to put on an amazing weekend in an amazing city. That event is always one of those times when I take a step back to really be thankful for the opportunities my friends and my music have allowed me to have the last few years.
What was the best part of your stay in Rome?
The food. I love history. I collect antique books, and love to read biographies, and am just kind of generally obsessed with history. So you would think that my favorite part of Rome would be it’s amazing ruins. Don’t get me wrong, I was completely mesmerized by them, and spent hours and hours exploring. BUT If you are asking about the best part of my stay, I have to be honest. it was the food. I grew up in a tiny town in Virginia, and there was only one family restaurant there. It was an Italian restaurant, and Vito the owner became a good family friend because of the frequency with which my family ate there. It was authentic Italian food, as Vito grew up in Italy. I think that’s one of the main reasons Italian food is my favorite, and one of the reasons my trip to Rome was dominated by my stomach!
Can you tell us anything about your future projects
I am putting the finishing touches on my new studio album right now, and I’m hoping to have it out in the next couple months. I also just filmed a movie with Mark Pellegrino in Germany, and it really felt good to get to do some acting again! I’m not sure of the release date yet, but keep an eye out for that. It was really a lot of fun to work with someone whose work I admire so much. His wife Tracy directed it, and she did an amazing job!
Will you be joining the next convention?
I really am excited to confirm that I will indeed be coming back to Italy next May for the 4th installment of Jus in Bello!!
Any advice for young people in love with music?
Get better! That’s it. Just keep working, keep studying, keep learning, keep improving. If you are thinking about taking lessons on an instrument, take piano. If you play guitar, you know the guitar. If you play Piano, you know music. Write your own stuff, and record everything you are working on. can’t tell you how many times I’ve written a verse, or a chorus, or even a whole song, and come back to it the next day with no recollection! gone forever! That’s enough for music advice from a guy that’s still learning himself. 
What song/music piece do you think suits you best now? (Yours or somebody else’s)
There are a couple songs on the new album that I think perfectly sum up what’s going on with me at the moment. “Move” is one I’m especially proud of. It’s a new love song to an old love. And it is, quite literally, baby making music. My daughter was born last week, in fact, so this new album may just have to come with a user warning.
Where do you take your inspiration from for your songs?
I’m really lucky to be married to my college sweatheart. I’ve been with her since way before I ever played a concert, so for heartfelt inspiration I never have to look very far. I also have been trying to branch out a bit and be inspired by things outside the realm of just my every day life. In those cases the inspirational subject matter can be as varied as the books on my shelf, or the countries on my tours!

Da cosa è nata la tua passione della musica e quando hai capito che avresti voluto fosse la tua carriera?
Mio padre aveva una magnifica voce quando cantava e penso che mi abbia insegnato come cantare, o quantomeno cantare con lui mentre crescevo mi ha trasmesso il desiderio di cantare. Non avrvo mai capito che sarei stato un cantante, solo col senno di poi mi sono accorto di esserlo diventato. Quando sono arrivato a Los Angeles, cantare era una delle tre o quattro attività che mi piacevano davvrto, ma di tutte le possibili carriere, non avrei mai scommesso di diventare cantente professionista! Ho appena iniziato a lavorare sempre più come musicista. e praticamente all’improvviso ho realizzato che in realtà sono solamente un musicista e lo sono stato per anni, non posso lamentarmi. Mi piace veramente, e finché continuerò a migliorare con ogni canzone/tour/disco/etc. [che faccio], non lo cambierei per niente al mondo.
Come descriveresti il panorama dell’industria musicale internazionale?
Appassionante, nuova, vibrante, stimolante. Cambia in continuazione. Persino da quando è uscito il mio primo disco nel 2006, l’industria è cambiata completamente. Non molto tempo fa un musicista indie non aveva praticamente possibilità, perché era così difficile far arrivare la tua musica nei negozi, ma ora con itunes e tutti gli altri negozi online, la mia musica è disponibile praticamente negli stessi posti dove si trova qualsiasi artista importante. Ci sono anche possibilità di suonare per persone online, è un modo innovativo di connettere coi fan. Quanto è diventato più o meno raggiungibile “il successo ?
In qualche modo è più facile, come per esempio dicevo per quanto riguarda la distribuzione. Le barriere d’ingresso sono praticamente inesistenti, quindi in quel senso è meno difficile. Il problema è che allo stesso tempo è facile per chiunque mettere la propria musica su itunes, quindi c’è talmente tanta roba in giro che è difficile emergere e attirare nuovi fan. Quindi penso sia più facile raggiungere un piccolo successo di quanto non fosse in passato ma, superare quella nicchie ed emergere davvero è estremamente difficile.
Alcune tue canzoni sono state usate nella colonna sonora di Supernatural. Come è nata questa collaborazione?
Ho conosciuto Jensen tempo fa. Anzi, era la mia prima settimana a Los Angeles, e siamo amici da allora. È sempre stato di grande sostegno, ed è stato grazie a lui che ho avuto la possibilità di suonare a un raduno di fan di Supernatural a Los Angeles. Ebbi la fortuna di incontrare anche l’ideatore della serie, Eric Kripke, e ci mettemmo a chiacchierare e mi chiese un CD. Disse che avrebbero trovato uno spazio nel programma, e io praticamente risi e gli dissi che cantavo un sacco di canzoni d’amore, non esattamente l’atmosfera adatta per due fratelli cacciatori di fantasmi su un’Impala, ma lui sorrise e disse che avrebbe pensato a qualcosa. Lo fecero, eccome, ed è una scena molto divertente, ironica, soprattutto conoscendo la conversazione che avevamo avuto.
Hai partecipato alla convention Jus in Bello. Come è stata questa esperienza?
Jus In Bello!! Roma!! Daniela!! Ero assolutamente entusiasta di essere stato invitato a roma per la terza volta a partecipare a Jus in Bello, e ogni volta è anche meglio! Mi sono veramente divertito, come ogni attore, musicista, coniuge, e fan con cui abbia parlato. Daniela e il suo staff hanno veramente superato se stessi nell’organizzare un finesettimana fantastico in una città fantastica. Ogni volta quell’evento mi fa considerare quante opportunità di cui essere grato mi hanno dato i miei amici e la mia musica negli ultimi anni.
Il momento migliore del soggiorno a Roma?
Il cibo. Amo la storia. Colleziono libri d’epoca, e amo leggere biografie, sono praticamente ossessionato con la storia. Quindi penseresti che la mia parte preferita di Roma siano le sue magnifiche rovine. Non fraintendermi, ero completamente incantato, e le ho esplorate per ore. MA se mi chiedi la cosa migliore del mio soggiorno, devo essere onesto: il cibo. Sono cresciuto in una microscopica cittadina della Virginia, e lì c’era solo un ristorante a conduzione famigliare. Era un ristorante italiano, e Vito (il proprietario) divenne un amico di famiglia, per le volte che mangiavamo lì. Era vero cibo italiano, visto che Vito era cresciuto in Italy. Credo questa sia una delle ragioni principali per cui il cibo italiano è il mio preferito, e una delle ragioni per cui il mio viaggio a Roma è stato stomaco-centrico!
Qual è il tuo prossimo progetto? Puoi darci qualche anticipazione?
Sto dando i ritocchi finali al mio nuovo disco, e spero che sia pronto in un paio di mesi. Ho anche appena finito di girare un film con Mark Pellegrino in Germania, ed è stato davvero piacevole recitare ancora! Non so quando uscirà, ma stacci attenta. È stato davvero molto divertente lavorare con persone il cui lavoro ammiro così tanto. Sua moglie Tracy l’ha diretto, e ha fatto un ottimo lavoro!
Pensi di tornare alla prossima convention?
Sono molto felice di confermare che in effetti tornerò in Italia a maggio per la quarta edizione di Jus in Bello!!
Un consiglio per i ragazzi con la passione della musica?
Fate pratica! Tutto qui. Lavorate, studiate, imparate, migliorate sempre. Se volete prendere lezioni di uno strumento, scegliete pianoforte. Se suonate la chitarra, conoscete la chitarra. Se suonate il piano, conoscete la musica. Scrivete i vostri pezzi, e registrate ogni cosa a cui state lavorando. Non saprei dire quante volte ho scritto un verso, un coro, o un’intera canzone, per poi riprenderlo il giorno dopo senza ricordarmi [come continuarlo]! Sparito per sempre! Questo è l’unico consiglio che possa dare uno che sta ancora imparando. 😉
Il pezzo che più ti rappresenta al momento? (Tuo o di altri)
Ci sono un paio di pezzi del nuovo album che penso possano riassumere perfettamente quello che mi sta succedendo in questo momento. “Move” è uno di quelli di cui sono particolarmente fiero. E’ una nuova canzone d’amore ad un vecchio amore. Ed è, quasi letteralmente, “baby making music”. Mia figlia è nata il mese scorso, così questo album può solo che uscire con un avviso per gli utenti.
Da dove prendi l’ispirazione?
Ho la grande fortuna di aver sposato la mia fidanzata del college. Sono stato con lei da ben prima di suonare a un concerto, quindi per l’ispirazione più sentita non ho mai dovuto cercare chissà dove. Ho anche provato a diversificarmi un po’ e trarre ispirazioni da cose che non fanno parte della mia vita di tutti i giorni. In quei casi la fonte d’ispirazione varia dal libro sul mio comodino, ai paesi dei miei tour!
